3D models
« dnia: 06 Maja 2020, 23:04:19 »
Hi!

This evening, just for fun, I tried to make something that might potentially (potentially!) find a place in TD2.
Here's what I've done. I'd like to know if the TD2 community would like to see this in some stations and, if so, how can I send it to who and in which format.

But maybe you think it doesn't look good and it ends here  :P

See you soon!

Sorry, the only Polish words I understand are "witam" and "kolej" :)
I'm learning some Polish train-related words. Please be patient if sometimes I ask to speak in English.

Hi Angelo, it is good to know, that you want to do some models to our simulator. It would be nice if you do this model in modern way. What I mean.

First of all, we are using model scaling called Level Of Details. It means, that the same model has more than one mesh. First one (LOD0) is very detailed mesh, that is only visible in closed look. Second one (LOD1) is generally speaking model like this from your picture. LOD1 is visible from some distance, so details like bevels, or some details are not visible and could be reduced or deleted. LOD2 is quite general view. Many detail in LOD2 are completely missing. LOD3 is very general view. Please look at this sample tutorial:
The second thing what we want to introduce is PBR texturing. I am using Substance Painter (it is free if you are a student). PBR texturing is not required, but looks pretty. Of course PBR texturing takes more time compared do photo-texture, but from my perspective it is worth the effort.

So, finished model should have one material for all LODs, and each LOD should have only one mesh unless your model will be animated. In this case, each part should be separate mesh.

So if you want, there is a dedicated channel on mattermost called blender-warsztaty. It is polish channel in general, but I think there is no problem if some of communication will be in English. We could discuss many details there.

And finally, we are requiring that every model added to the simulator has a license for unlimited use. CC0 or CC1 is preferred.

Thank you!  :D

I roughly knew how LODs work, but I never actually worked on them, so I will need to take some time to learn.

PBR texturing is interesting. To me, using it in a game seems sci-fi. I used to make 3D models for Trainz, and if you ever played with it, you know that it works on a very old engine - at least until TANE and 2019 came out, but I never bought them.

About the license: to me TD2 is just a game, and games are meant to be fun. So, as long as what I do remains in TD2, you can literally do whatever you want except selling the model. Which I think does not limit in any way the use of the model in TD2, but if it does tell me  :)

So, next thing will be working on LODs.
What will be the next next thing?

When you have all meshes textured, you could send this work to me directly (separately blend file, separately texture files), and if everything will be OK, your model will be available in next release of simulator.

Back to the license. We have very negative experience with approach “take my model, do what you want”, so we decided to introduce strict model licensing. Due to the paid supporter, we are of the opinion that the license must consider resale. Because this aspect is one of the problems that currently prevents the use / modification of some models that we have right now. So, in order not to have a similar problem in the future, each new model must be delivered with the option of resale.

Ok then, let it be CC1 for this model.
I'll work on the LODs and maybe - maybe! - I'll try PBR and then I'll send the model to you.  :)
