- After changes, objects Ocean, Lake, River and WaterPlane don't look the same anymore, and their colors and waves' sizes vary slightly.
- "Real waves" have been disabled in Lake and WaterPlane objects (#2656).

- Because of the fact, that some minor changes and bugfixes need to be applied, the release of new simulator's version (2022.2.1 “Latarnia”) is going to take place during the holiday time. Intensive works are ongoing to ensure that new version is refined and complete.
- There's a possibility, that the third round of new simulator's version tests is going to take place. Further information will be announced soon.

Recollection

On the 16th of December 2022, Michał, known on our virtual tracks as michAL-57 (https://td2.info.pl/profile/?u=23976) has passed away for his eternal shift. The tragic information has been shared with us by his father Jarosław, to whom we convey heartful condolences. We commiserate with everyone shocked by Michał's passing.

SWDR5
Conceptual works on new version of SWDR system have been launched. For the next 2 week intensive documentation works will take place, then internal discussion and some changes to that docs. For now we'd like to focus mainly on the line block. Preliminary plan consists of 5 stages of work only on the line blocks. Once that's done, we'd like to focus on another parts of SWDR system. The TD2 ecosystem's elements are related to each other, and a change in only one thing depends on huge amount of other elements, which require additional adaptation. Moreover we have to retain the backwards compatibility. Updates on works will be released regularly. This does not imply that current SWDR4 system is going to be abandoned, we are going to keep the maintenance and release some minor changes eliminating major bugs and imperfections. It is not likely, that the SWDR4 system is going to be replaced this year.

- During the past several weeks, the developers have been trying to fix the "broken shaders" issue, which could be noticed as "shining" of many objects and improper rendering of them (as seen on the screenshots below). Because of that, the release of next version has been delayed by a month, effectively making it impossible to be published in May. To resolve the issue, all of the changes made since April needed to be revised with step-by-step analysis which of them could have been the source of the issue. Fortunately, the problem has been resolved and moreover, Unity has been upgraded to version 2022.3.0f1 LTS. That means, we're currently heading straight to the release of new version 2023.1. During the current week, test compilation is going to be shared with Sponsors. However, we'd like to emphasize, that the release of EP09 locomotive, announced earier, will not be the part of new version. It is currently scheduled to be added to the 2023.2 version of simulator, which is going to be released later this year.

The first round of new simulator's version tests has been completed, and no significant issued have been detected. The Developers have successfully dealt with the issues reported by the Users and some additional enhancements and updates have been added, for example in scenery editor. The stable release is scheduled to be released in the middle of the oncoming week. We'd like to say a big 'thank you' for your commitment to the tests of new version.
The changelog (excluding the fixes):
- Added the possibility to change the generation distance of neighboring ties (in range 0.5 m - 1.5 m, with the default setting of 0.6 m)
- Maximum rail curve radius changed to 100 km
- Minimum road curve radius changed to 5 m
- All of the signal's lights are now lit up in the editor
- The available range of parallel rail insertion has been increased

Dear Members of the TD2 Simulator Community,
Exactly a year ago, on August 28, 2022, the first edition of the "Week in the Simulator" series was released. It was very well received by all of you, and it naturally evolved into a unique channel of communication between the Simulator Team and you, providing you with the latest information every week about what's happening around the simulator, often from the behind-the-scenes perspective. Today, we present to you the fifty-third edition of our weekly magazine, which aims to summarize all significant events from the past year and also outline the Team's plans for the simulator's further development in the near future.
We would also like to hear your feedback on what you like about our weekly magazine and what could be changed/improved. Over the past year, two major versions of the simulator and two patches were released:

Of course, there were many more introduced changes, and while we could list many other modifications that took place in the past year, we don't want to bore you by listing everything that can be found in the changelog.
Sceneries
What would the models and all the enhancements added to the simulator be without the scenery, the essence of our virtual routes? In the past year, there have been many significant changes in scenery construction, such as the need to introduce lighting elements, narrowing the distance between tracks in the magical forest to 4 meters, and many others. Therefore, the Constructor Team, as well as individual scenery creators, have been working diligently to complete their projects.
At this point, we want to thank every person who has contributed to the construction of sceneries that currently delight simulator users.
Changes in the Team
Changes in the simulator are not just about new models, objects, scenery, tools, but also about the individuals who have worked over the years for the development of the simulator, as well as those who have decided to submit applications and have been accepted into the Team.
For the intensive work towards TD2's development, we would like to thank those who worked for TD2 in the past and left the Team in the last year. They are: KMSzczecin, deemixx, Atmosferyczny, inomushis, Kamads, Paweł, uetam, Kacper9, Fofal, Meril, and KASisq.
Some of the vacated positions have been filled by new Team members. They are: Wewek, radocha26, Bartek2002, Hammer, Newmikus2k, BartholomeoD3, Till, and Pepsi2026.
...Will Happen Tomorrow
The Simulator Team is diligently working on further improvements, models, applications, tools, and features that will enhance immersion and enjoyment of gameplay even more. Some are currently in the conceptual phase, others in development, and some are at such an advanced stage that we'd like to present a list of projects being intensively worked on, whose results you'll be able to see in the near future.
- SSO (formerly the "Spawn" project) - a project that, after several months of stagnation, is back in the spotlight. A large portion of its functionality is already complete, and intensive work on the application's frontend will take place in September. Currently, we estimate that the project should be unveiled by the end of the year.
- Main Track Occupancy Board - a model aimed at increasing the simulation's immersion. The Team is working on preparing such a board in various size variants to fit every signal box. The final model will be fully interactive.

- EP09 locomotive - intensive work is underway to refine the model. The Team aims to ensure that this highly anticipated product is created perfectly and accurately replicates reality as much as possible within the simulator's conditions.

- Among the upcoming railway rolling stock models, we can mention freight wagons with designations 421S, 426Z, and 425S.
- The Constructors Team, in addition to their meticulous work in the SSS, is also currently working on the "Węglówka" project (i.e., LK131), which includes scenes from Kraski, Kłudna, and Kozuby, as well as the "ŁKA" project, where the construction of LK1 scenes like Rokiciny and Baby is in progress.
- The Editors Team, in collaboration with the Association's Board, is also working on a new TD-related Wiki, which will be built from scratch. The new Wiki will use some of the existing articles, some will be rewritten or simplified. We want the new Wiki to be more user-friendly and, in addition to collecting useful information and documents, present them in a more accessible way. Work on the new version of the site has already begun, and we will keep you informed of their progress.

In the anniversary edition, we published a survey, the activity of which continued in the previous issue of the magazine. We received 71 responses, for which we sincerely thank you.
The overwhelming majority of respondents read every issue of the Weekly Magazine. The most important section for you is the "Simulator" section.
Below, we have gathered the most interesting suggestions. We will try to implement some of them in the upcoming issues of the Weekly Magazine, while others will require some conceptual work to implement them properly.
- More: information about the functioning of the simulator, information about newly released sceneries, graphics/photos,
- Adding hyperlinks along with a table of contents,
- Introducing precise release dates for individual simulator elements or versions,

The previous week was spent on testing the new version of the simulator. Developers have been actively addressing the issues observed and reported by you (41 tickets) and have been working on the optimiziation of new features. Some of the reported issues, not considered critical, will be solved in a patch or in the next release, which we aim to do later this year. Currently, preparations are underway to release the new version, and we do not plan a second round of testing at this time.
The release of the stable version is currently in its final stages, and it can be expected in the nearest future.

Sceneries will no longer be loaded all at once, and static objects like plants will be split into "chunks" dynamically loaded within the camera's render distance. This has shortened scenery loading times, increased gameplay smoothness, and reduced the frequency of the black loading screen when loading another scenery. As a side effect of the applied system, there are a few seconds of stuttering when the dispatcher teleports to distant signal boxes. The system is not active in the editor - there, the scenery is loaded all at once.

Introduction
Yet another week was dedicated to optimizing various simulator mechanisms. Internal tests show significant reduction in scenery loading and unloading times, a significant decrease in freezes during these operations, and a general increase in framerate. Thanks to the generosity of GitLab, we managed to obtain a commercial license for our most important tool free of charge. This license unlocks several important features for us, facilitating work organization (e.g. ticket dependencies). As part of Black Friday, taking advantage of the ongoing shopping frenzy, we also made several purchases, mainly servers, but we also bought two models.
Simulator
- During in-team tests, specific data on the chunk system were collected. According to them, using this system, depending on the hardware, sceneries, and other settings, loading times can be 30-70% shorter, gameplay smoothness can increase by 20-40%, and RAM usage can be about 30% lower.
- During the ongoing work, processes that affect performance during scenery loading were identified. It turned out that many elements were loaded very inefficiently (in addition, some resource-intensive processes were unnecessarily invoked multiple times), resulting in significant performance drops and long loading times. Thanks to the introduced changes, which mainly concerned the method of loading tracks and switches, as well as adjusting the limits on the number of loaded objects per frame, it was possible to significantly speed up and streamline the loading process. In the coming days, tests will measure how much this will improve scene loading.

- Continuation of work on optimization, focusing mainly on rendering tracks and sleepers. A mechanism is being developed that will connect and save turnouts and mountings in turnouts, reducing the number of objects to display, shortening their generation time, and thereby improving gameplay smoothness and reducing scenery loading times. In addition, it has turned out possible to simplify and shorten the checking of conditions for generating sleepers in tracks, illuminating lanterns, and using switches in the cabin with use of the keyboard. At the end of the work, a comparison will be prepared to show the difference in smoothness, scenery loading time, and resource consumption in the prepared version compared to the stable version. Due to newly discovered optimization issues and the possibility of obtaining additional FPS, the release is delayed, but we are trying to make it available before the winter holidays.

As part of the optimization process, one of the most important changes has been introduced: improvement of the method of generating and rendering sleepers. Previously, each sleepers was set as a physical object on the scenery and rendered one after the other. This caused lag spikes during their generation and significantly extended the rendering of each frame. The new system uses the instance rendering mechanism, significantly reducing the number of draw calls on the graphics engine (i.e., commands to render the grid sent from CPU to GPU). This translates into a noticeable increase in gameplay smoothness and eliminates lags during the generation of sleepers. The chart below shows how, over the course of the recent optimization stages, the frame rates (fps) and frame generation times (ms) changed in dispatcher mode on several scenes. The "build6/stable" column indicates the performance improvement in the latest developer version compared to the stable version 2023.2.1, and "build6/build4" indicates the improvement caused only by the changed rendering of sleepers. The presented data was measured on a fairly powerful computer, and in the coming week, final measurements comparing gameplay smoothness and scene loading times on hardware with different components will be conducted.

Optimization work is coming to an end, and the last stage, optimization of rolling stock loading, is planned for this week. The release date has not yet been determined, but it should become clear in the next few days.
ATTENTION! The gantry_01 and stripper objects have been COMPLETELY removed from the simulator due to their very bad optimization. Scenery creators are kindly asked to eliminate them from their sceneries and not include them in new ones. In the near future, the bower_xx objects will also be removed, so they should also be phased out.

In the meantime, the previous idea was verified and slightly modified - vehicle objects will be placed independently of the rendering range but with a limit of one per frame. Additionally, scripts for vehicles outside the range will be disabled, so their truck positions will not be unnecessarily updated, among other things. Furthermore, the "ownership" mechanism of networked vehicles has been changed. Previously, after detaching from the locomotive, wagons would become the property of the traffic controller, which sometimes caused problems with welding or derailing when flying around and trying to reconnect. From the new version, wagons will change ownership only when connected to another player or when the original owner logs out. The main core mechanism has already been tested, and only minor things and cosmetics remain to be completed. The new version will be delayed by about 7 days; the delay of the new version may change.

- During the implementation of corrections, a bug was found in the purchased Obi Rope asset (which allowed the creation of flexible brake hose models), which made the initialization of vehicles when joining the scenery approx. three times as long. After fixing it, the instantiation of vehicle objects should have an even smaller impact on gameplay smoothness.
- On Sunday (January 14th), we completed work on a new version of the simulator and began preparing the release, which will be available in the next week.

There are plans for 28 liveries, with around 10 to be included in the next version 2024.1.1. Work on the cabin and the physics of electric motors will continue over the next weeks, requiring modifications to existing scripts, removal of "LD" structures, and the addition of new features such as a differential relay or a demagnetizing coil for the fast switch. Additionally, the possibility of cold starts will be added to all electric vehicles, with the ET22 having an extended mechanism involving a small compressor to raise the pantographs.

Next week, more work will be carried out on adapting the remaining vehicles to the new physics, simulating starting resistance temperatures, new logic for "traction balls". Ultimately, long-awaited screenshots of the first ET22 cabin painting will be presented.
- Every week, dispatchers, with the help of drivers, provide us with entertainment by trying to extract the absolute maximum from traffic conditions - yet another improvement of the record for the length of a completed timetable has been broken. TrBleMaker (https://td2.info.pl/profile/?u=28203) created a timetable covering 389.55 km, which was completed by matiz686 (https://td2.info.pl/profile/?u=1419). This result is over 40 km higher than the record set by the same dispatcher just over a month ago (it is currently in 7th place in the ranking).

As this is the last issue of the Weekly before Easter, on behalf of myself as the Head of Editors and all the people involved in creation of the Weekly, I would like to wish you that this time of rest be free from all worries and daily concerns, and may the beautiful spring weather that accompanies it fill your hearts with joy and optimism. - Krzys292 (https://td2.info.pl/profile/?u=6439) - electric motor physics: this week, work on the new physics of electric motors has been completed. New scripts have been applied to all electric locomotives and EMUs, allowing the removal of "LD" mechanism files, moreover the physics of all vehicles has been standardized. Additionally, a simulation of the temperature of starting resistors has been introduced. If they overheat, the player will receive a message in the chat about their burning out, the main circuit will be interrupted, and further driving will not be possible. The parameters have been deliberately adjusted so that under normal driving conditions with the starting resistor fans enabled (in ET22, it will be possible to turn them off), they will not be able to burn out. The only exception to this is EP09, where even with the fans running, they can be burned out during intensive acceleration, which naturally will prevent this locomotive from operating with freight trains. Next week, work will be carried out on simulating wheel slip and new functionalities such as CA/SHP system refresh, as well as adapting the cabs of other vehicles to the new functionalities and cold start.

Week 13/2024 - clarification
Dear Users,
Some of you could have noticed that there was no English version of yesterday's rather emotional post in the pages of the Weekly. The genesis of that post can obviously be found by looking at the calendar. I'd like to point out (if any of you translated the post by yourself) that there was a lot of truth, especially about you being a wonderful community and me thanking each and every one of you for your presence.
Please let me refrain from further explanation of the joke, because if a joke needs to be explained, it means it's not good. However, I'm glad that some people actually fell for the published content - it means it was worth posting ;)
On Monday, April 8th, a combined issue of the Weekly covering weeks 13 and 14 will be released. Personally, I'll make sure that this time all the necessary information appears in the right places - not to satisfy my whim, but above all for you, because you deserve to be well informed about everything happening around the simulator.

- Krzys292 (https://td2.info.pl/profile/?u=6439), Marcin_S (https://td2.info.pl/profile/?u=2013) - Progress on the ET22: Further improvements and enhancements were implemented in the functionalities of the vehicle, and another batch of new sounds was added. Cabin textures were refined, and next week work will continue on additional liveries and cabin color variants. Additionally, a manual describing the new functionalities and the cold start procedure for this locomotive was developed and published. More information in the 'Wikipedia' section.

- Slip simulation added. Wheels may slip during excessive acceleration or braking, reducing the force applied to the vehicle. Various wheel set faults will be added to this system in the future.
- New watchdog scripts. Standardization and new mechanisms for more realistic simulation of the CA and SHP systems. Additionally, the SHP signaling was removed from the SM42.
- Adaptation of old cabins to new scripts. Scripts and mechanisms in the EP09 cabin were refreshed to match those of the ET22. Cabin functionalities of the EU06, EU/P07, EP08, and ET41 were standardized - as a side effect of removing LD, the camshaft switch and battery in the 4E cabins had to be removed.
- Added cold start capability to all electric locomotives. Cold start in cabins other than the ET22 will be simplified, with the battery and pneumatic system of pantographs powered on. Additionally, cold start will only be possible when the locomotive is not coupled to any cars.
- Improvement of brakes on locomotives not controlled by the player. This change enables driving with multiple locomotives as cars in the consist. Previously, these locomotives behaved as if their brake valves were set to the running position, causing them to pump the mainline and preventing the consist from braking. As part of the fix, default locomotives will have their brake valve set to the cutoff position. Additionally, consists with a warm start will be slightly braked by default to prevent rolling.
- A slight delay of the undervoltage relay was added - the quick switch will not turn off immediately after the voltage drops on the voltmeter; the drop must last at least 0.2 s. This will resolve the issue of WS disconnecting when driving with dynamic pantographs on a catenary network not fully adapted to the track.

Introduction
Last week, not much visibly happened in the Simulator's ecosystem - this is because the Team has tirelessly been working internally on finalizing matters related to the release of the new version 2024.1.x, and among that, the premiere of the ET22 locomotive. In the upcoming weeks, we will gradually provide more information on these matters. Stay in the loop and keep an eye out for updates, but for now, let's proceed to a brief (yet informative) read :)
